The Medical Writer in 2030: How AI Reshapes Roles Without Replacing Expertise

This article summarizes a presentation delivered by Anita Modi, MBA, at the 2026 AMWA Pacific Coast Conference 

Session presenter Anita Modi, MBA, discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to reshape the field of medical writing over the coming decade. Drawing from her experience developing AI-enabled solutions and collaborating with medical writers across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, she provided a practical perspective on how the profession is evolving in response to rapidly advancing technologies.

Modi explained that conversations surrounding AI in medical writing often fall into two opposing extremes. One perspective suggests that AI will ultimately replace medical writers altogether, whereas the other assumes that AI will have little meaningful impact on the profession. Based on her experience in the industry, however, Modi emphasized that the reality lies somewhere in between these viewpoints. Rather than eliminating medical writers, AI is more likely to transform how they work, shifting their focus away from repetitive operational tasks and toward more strategic scientific responsibilities.

A major theme of the presentation was the growing role of AI in improving efficiency during document development. AI-powered systems are already helping reduce timelines for preparing regulatory and clinical documents. For example, the time needed to generate the first draft of a Clinical Study Report has reportedly decreased from nearly 15 days to approximately 5 days when AI-assisted workflows are incorporated. Such improvements are primarily driven by the automation of highly structured and repetitive activities that traditionally consumed substantial time.

Tasks that are particularly well-suited for AI support include

  • organizing and processing large datasets 

  • generating tables

  • drafting standard document sections

  • inserting boilerplate language

  • handling formatting or template-related requirements

As these activities follow predefined structures and rules, AI systems can perform them efficiently and consistently, allowing medical writers to devote more time to higher-value scientific work.

Despite these advancements, the most critical aspects of medical writing still rely heavily on human expertise. Medical writers play an essential role in interpreting complex scientific information, exercising judgment when data are incomplete or ambiguous, maintaining scientific consistency across documents, and ensuring the overall integrity and quality of regulatory submissions. Responsibilities, such as shaping the scientific narrative of a compound, evaluating risk–benefit messaging, and ensuring alignment between clinical, regulatory, and safety documents, continue to require human reasoning and accountability.

As AI becomes more integrated into medical writing workflows, the profession itself will likely evolve rather than diminish. Future medical writers may spend less time on manual drafting and formatting tasks and increasingly function as scientific strategists, reviewers, and interpreters of complex data. Their responsibilities may expand further into areas such as

  • cross-functional collaboration

  • critical evaluation of AI-generated outputs

  • maintenance of scientific accuracy

  • guidance of the overall communication strategy for regulatory documentation

Another important point raised during the session was the dependence of AI systems on high-quality source information. Modi stressed that AI tools are only as effective as the data and instructions provided to them. Even highly sophisticated AI systems cannot independently create reliable scientific content without accurate, well-structured, and scientifically sound inputs. For this reason, she described AI as an enabling tool that can accelerate workflows and improve efficiency, but not as a replacement for the expertise, critical thinking, and accountability of trained medical writers.

The presentation concluded with an extended question-and-answer session, during which attendees raised numerous questions about the future of the profession. Several graduate students and early-career professionals asked about the challenges of entering the field during a period of rapid technological change. 

In response, Modi shared that based on discussions with multiple leaders across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, she has not observed evidence of a broad decline in hiring. Instead, demand for skilled medical writers continues. However, the skill sets expected of professionals may evolve as AI becomes more widely adopted within the industry.
